International Women’s Day 2023

We were delighted to host our annual celebration of International Women’s Day with like-minded sister organisations Stevenage Inner Wheel and Soroptimist International Hertford and District Club. This year’s theme is #embraceequity and the speakers provided an excellent platform for discussing their own stories and accomplishments to overcome gender barriers both personally and professionally.  It was impressive.

Local dignitaries were present from Deputy Lieutenant, Kate Belinis, the Mayor of Stevenage, the Leader of Stevenage Borough Council, Hertfordshire County Council Chairman and guests from numerous community and charities plus a group of students from North Herts College.

All the female speakers talked about their personal journeys to manage and navigate in order for them to achieve their potential in diverse workplaces such as legal, commerce, police, domestic abuse, supporting families/children, substance misuse, health and Afghan refugee.  The feedback was: inspirational speakers; learnt so much about employment and health hardships, racism, glass ceilings, refugee.

However, the audience of over 100 guests contributed to the celebrations of success and how to embrace equity in whatever format – so many have triumphed and now in turn have become role models in their chosen careers.  It was a joyous occasion with food, poetry and general heart-warming support of each other.

Feedback:

It was remarkable to hear so many powerful and inspirational accounts of the difficulties so many women face. I was so moved by all the speakers and it was a joy to be part of this memorable occasion.”

Thank you so much for today, I enjoyed every moment! The women in attendance were so inspiring! Happy IWD!

Yes I echo those sentiments! Well done everyone concerned. A great programme, well organised – and a LARGE audience!”
